I am a journalist, broadcaster and entrepreneur based in Geneva /// I am the Director of World Radio Switzerland, the English-speaking public service radio of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation /// I am also the Director of Anyscreen, a consulting and multimedia production company /// I have done a few things that have been written about /// I am straddling the world of incumbent and social media and observing their difficult, often tense, interaction /// I firmly believe that technology helps us create more compelling content /// I have been in the press and media business for about 30 years /// I am a former Director of New Media at Swiss Television in Geneva /// Before that I was Head of News and Current Affairs at TSR /// From 1979 to 1994 I spent 15 years in the US, first as a freelancer in NYC and then as Washington Correspondent and Bureau Chief /// I got my first computer, a Kaypro, in 1983 and with it an internet connection ///A lot has changed since…Before that…///
When speaking about incumbent or more aptly “resilient” media, I do not believe in the “death” of radio or tv /// I prefer to talk about the “death of death”, in other words about transformation and evolution /// I do believe however that it is through our various screens and no longer through television or radio as we commonly define them that our image of the the world and of reality and of ourselves is being shaped. The net is therefore our media of reference. If you don’t believe that, you just don’t understand the world we live in /// Period /// I am also convinced that media per se matters much less than how we experience it. /// And I am also of the opinion that technology has a bigger impact on society than content. Most often, that last conviction does not go down too well with my fellow journalists. Pretty much everything I do today is collecting the arguments to make my case convincing.
Lastly, I like to keep an open mind but to quote a former NYTIMES publisher , “not open enough that my brains fall out!”
